Classic V12 for Concourse
This is a Lincoln K V12 .. you may have seen it at the Pebble Beach and Kirkland concours in 2013 ... it was also driven in the Tour d' Elegance. All the castings were metal finished prior to painting as they look better and can be kept clean over time, even with a lot of driving. This was a complete rebuild, bored .020 over with hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel. The pistons and all gaskets had to be custom made as they are no longer available. I assembled the block as they did at the factory complete with transmission prior to painting. This block is a custom color match I made in PPG concept to an unexposed area of original paint I found on the trans under a bracket. The fuel pump housing was extremely worn so I bushed the housing. All the hoses, clamps and hardware are correct, right down to the copper rivets holding the ID tags on the accessories........ I even re-blued the dist cap clips.
No wonder the engine ran horrible and weeped a fair amount of fuel! After much careful, patient straightening with heat, I bead blasted the Stromberg's castings and painted them with PPG DP90 and Concept Black... both highly durable and fuel resistant paints.
Low Mileage Checkup and Update
This car is a one owner 1958 Mercedes 220S with 58K miles on it. The engine has minimal wear throughout. I polished the crankshaft with 1000, lightly honed the cylinders, gave the head an unleaded fuel conversion and a new timing chain and guides . The idea on the restoration throughout the entire car was to keep the car as original and untouched looking as possible. In photo 7 the camshaft cover was medium glass beaded, rubbed with mothers, then washed thoroughly. That gave it an original with slight patina look, perfect! This car has since been driven round trip from Tacoma, Washington to Pebble Beach, California in 2014 and is currently on display at the Lemay Car Museum.
Okay, how do carburetors get this grungy? In this sequence, the 220S exhaust manifold had a severely frozen heat riser, so I re-bushed the manifold. The intake manifold was medium glass beaded as the fine was too shiny compared to the original sheen.
